We believe that water baptism, in Jesus’ name, is an important part of a Christian conversion experience, just as it was for the first believers, as recorded in the book of Acts (Acts 2:38, Acts 8:16, Acts 19:5).
In ancient times the power and authority of a person rested completely in their name.
When Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 28:19 to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” they understood His direction.
They understood Jesus wasn’t telling them to baptize in the “titles” Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. No, they completely understood that Jesus was commanding them to baptize in the Name (singular) of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They knew the name of the Son for it was Jesus. They knew that when Jesus said, “the Father and I are One” (John 10:30) or when Phillip asked for Jesus to show them the Father and Jesus answered, “Have I been so long time with you and yet have you not known me, Phillip? He that has seen me has seen the Father…” (John 14:8-11); they understood the Messiah to be Emmanuel (God among us), and to be the Almighty God and The Everlasting Father (Isaiah 9:6). The disciples understood Jesus’ command and they understood who Jesus was, is, and is to come. Jesus is the invisible God made manifest to humanity. Jesus was God manifested in the flesh reaching for a lost and dying world (I Timothy 3:16).
How do we know the disciples understood this? We read in the book of Acts that every baptism is done in the Name of Jesus. There is no other name given; the power and authority rests in Jesus’ name. Therefore, we baptize in the same name the disciples baptized believers in the early church. We encourage you to read your Bible and research this for yourself.
How do we know we can trust the disciples interpretation?
In Matthew 13:11 Jesus told the disciples it was given unto them to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven. In Colossians 1:26, Paul writes that, “Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints.” Then in Ephesians 3:4-5 Paul tells us that the mystery of Christ which had been hidden is revealed “unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.”
